Capri Honeymoon Guide

The Isle of Capri – Italy’s most famous island and the haunt of movie stars, literati and everyone famous since the Roman Emperor Tiberius first established his home here in the 1st century AD – is the perfect Mediterranean island for a honeymoon.

With its exclusive ambiance, chic boutiques, fine dining restaurants and good choice of accommodation to suit all budgets, Capri offers all the ingredients you need for a great island honeymoon in Italy.

Set in a deep blue sea just off the Sorrentine Peninsula, Capri boasts a rugged mountain surrounded by picture-perfect coves, jagged cliffs, underwater grottos and dramatic swimming sites – perfect for active honeymoon couples.

What to do and see

Explore the winding, hilly alleyways and narrow stone-paved streets of Capri town, crowded with fashionable clothing and jewellery boutiques, handicraft shops, galleries, nightclubs and hotels.

Relax at a sidewalk cafe, bar or restaurant on the famous Piazzetta – the place to see and be seen.

Capri offers countless easy-to-follow trails that wind up from the coast into the hills past cactus-covered cliffs and whitewashed houses overlooking the blue Mediterranean Sea.

Follow the Via Caposcuro and Via Migliera south to the clifftop lookout of Belvedere di Migliera for panoramic sea views.

In Capri town stroll the Via Camerelle, then take Via Tragara to the Faraglione di Terra, one of three limestone colossi that soar 100m out of the sea just off the Punta Tragara on the southern coast of Capri.

Walk on the idyllic beach beneath or explore pathways and descend hundreds of steps past the Grotto di Matermania on the Via Pizzo Lungo to Capri’s famous Arco Naturale, a natural rock bridge that overlooks the sea.

You can also choose to hike the Scala Fenicia (Fenician Staircase), which descends from Anacapri to Capri; the long staircase of 881 steps offers superb views and dates back to the 8th century BC.

Swim from the secluded beach at the base of Faraglione di Terra or cruise to picturesque offshore islands where you can glide through the tunnel of Faraglione di Mezzo.

Don't miss visiting the 14th century Palazzo Cerio – the finest medieval building still standing on the island.

And then explore the Certosa di San Giacomo, a religious charterhouse that includes a church, cloisters and gardens with panoramic views.

Alternatively, the nearby terraced public gardens of Giardini di Augusto offer some of the most scenic views in Capri.

Away from the jet-set glamour of Capri town, stroll a network of scenic walking trails that climb past lemon trees, whitewashed homes and gorgeous pastel-shaded villas to cactus-covered cliff tops with views over the deep blue Mediterranean Sea.

Ride the chairlift from the idyllic mountain village of Anacapri to the summit of Mount Solaro (594m) and explore the 14th century sanctuary of Santa Maria a Cetrella, offering panoramic views over Marina Piccola and Capri.

Charter a boat or join a boat tour to circumnavigate the island, stopping to admire hidden caves and swim in secluded coves.

Capri is quite small at only 16km in circumference, so tours generally take less than two hours.

Capri Sightseeing

The Isle of Capri offers a choice of must-see attractions for inquisitive couples, including…

La Grotta Azzurra

(The Blue Grotto) – Although you can no longer swim here, as Emperor Tiberius once did, the 60m-long, 25m-wide cave offers a surreal and extraordinary blue light that shimmers through the seawater.

The narrow and low entrance is accessed only in calm water by lying flat in a rowboat as you enter the cave.

The Blue Grotto is located on the northwest coast, around 10 minutes by boat from Marine Grand,. The spectacular underwater cavern is best explored by rowboat.

Villa Jovis

Wander amid the ruined walls of this imperial villa that was built in the 1st century AD then restored by the Emperor Tiberius, who dedicated the villa to Jupiter. Villa Jovis is the best preserved of the 12 villas built on the island by various ancient Roman emperors.

Stroll the magnificent Loggia Imperiale, a covered promenade on the edge of the cliff offering splendid panoramic views.

Villa Jovis is located on Mount Tiberio on the northeast coast and is easily reached by taxi from Capri town or by foot along a 2.4km-long walking path.

Certosa di San Giacomo

Stroll around the well-preserved cloisters of this 14th century charterhouse, believed to have been constructed over the remains of the sixth villa of Emperor Tiberius.

In the lunette, admire a fresco dating back to the end of the 14th century that depicts the Madonna with the Christ child, and in the museum, see a display of large Roman statues that were recovered from the sea floor.

Arco Naturale

This impressive natural arch is all that is left of a mountainside grotto and is easily found along a scenic cliff-side walking track or by boat.

Best beaches in Capri

Capri offers no great expanses of sand, instead, find hidden coves with pockets of sand and pebbles and rocky terraces framed by soaring cliffs, with steps or stairs descending into shimmering crystal clear water.

La Canzone del Mare also offers a solarium and two swimming pools filled with seawater. Marina Piccola is located on the south coast of Capri.

La Fontelina

This bathing area is spread over rocky terraces at the foot of the dramatic Faraglioni Rocks, just metres above the sea.

While not suitable for small children, this scenic bathing spot offers stunning natural beauty. Facilities include umbrellas, towels, toilets and a restaurant known for its fine cuisine.

Arrive by water taxi from Marina Piccola or on foot via the famous Via Krupp pathway.

Lido del Faro

Discover smooth rock terraces interspersed among natural jagged rocks just metres above the turquoise sea at this picturesque bathing establishment, located beneath the lighthouse at Punta Carena.

A grotto-like swimming hole sits framed by jagged rocks. Facilities include umbrellas, sun loungers, towels and a fine dining restaurant renowned for its cuisine.
